Update 1.20 for the Treo 650

Download & Install: Mac

This update requires a blank 32MB (or larger) SD/MMC expansion card and a USB expansion card reader. This is due to special file requirements that need these components. If you do not have these items, you may wish to install this update from a Windows desktop PC. If you have an expansion card with data on it, we can show you how to back up the data, format (erase) the card, perform the update, and then restore your data to the card. Click here for instructions.

Follow these instructions carefully. They tell you how to back up your data and restore it after the update. Remember, during the update all data on your smartphone is erased. Anything that is not backed up will be deleted permanently. The link to download is below.

Prepare your smartphone

  1. Update your bonus software: If you installed any software from the Treo 650 CD, we recommend that you get the latest versions now. Older versions of this software are not compatible with the newer Treo 650 ROM. You will experience resets and unstable behaviour if the older versions are present after the update is complete.
  2. Ensure you have a blank 32MB SD or MMC expansion card and a USB expansion card reader. If your expansion card has data on it, click here to learn how to back up your data, format (erase) the card, perform the update, and then restore your data to the card.
  3. Connect your smartphone its charger. It needs to be connected throughout the update.
  4. Make sure you have 0.6MB (600KB) Free Memory on your smartphone. Updating your device will reduce the available memory by about 0.6MB.
  5. Exchange ActiveSync (EAS, or wireless Outlook) users: This updater requires you to delete your EAS account, then re-establish it after the update.
    1. On your smartphone, launch VersaMail.
    2. Press Menu . From the Accounts menu, select Account Setup.
    3. Highlight your EAS (Outlook) account, and select Edit.
    4. Go through the setup screens and write down your settings. You'll need them later when you set up EAS again.
    5. Back at the Account Setup screen, highlight your EAS account, and select Delete.
  6. Make sure you know your smartphone's user name: how to find it. You'll need this to restore your data.
  7. Perform a HotSync operation to back up your data. Make sure your conduits are set to "Synchronize the files" (how).
  8. Do not turn on the phone features or connect to the wireless network at this point. Important: If the phone is on, press and hold Power/End to disconnect from the network. Then perform a soft reset.

Download and install

  1. Insert the blank SD/MMC expansion card into the reader, and connect the reader to your Mac (or follow the procedure recommended by the card reader manufacturer).
  2. Download: Treo_650_Updater_1_20_LAP_SD.sit (9.9 MB StuffIt archive)
  3. Your Mac's web browser should automatically expand the file into a folder named "PALM."
Note: If the browser does not expand the file automatically, use an expansion utility such as Allume StuffIt Expander.
  4. Drag and drop the decompressed PALM folder to the expansion card icon on your Mac's desktop. It is important that you drop this folder at the root of the expansion card (drag it to the icon; don't open the expansion card). Do not move it to a subfolder on the expansion card.
  5. Drag the expansion card icon to the Eject icon on the Mac's dock to un-mount it from your Mac.
  6. Insert the expansion card into your Treo smartphone.
  7. The updater will auto-start when you insert the card. Follow the onscreen instructions to begin the update.
  8. When you see the screen that asks you to tap targets (below), remove the expansion card from your smartphone. Then follow the onscreen instructions to calibrate the touchscreen and set date and time.
  9. If the update was successful, your smartphone's Software version number will be Treo650-1.20-LAP (how to check).
