SYDNEY, 16 July, 2001 -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced the registration of its 3,000th developer in Australia. Palm developers design, build and market software and hardware solutions for Palm(TM) handheld computers and the Palm OS(R) platform. The announcement marks the significant contribution that the Australian developer community has made to the Palm Economy since early 1998, when the first Australian developer registered with Palm.
The Palm Economy is a community of industry-leading licensees, world-class OEM customers, and more than 160,000 developers and solution providers, including Kodak, Shinei International and Panasonic, that have registered to support the Palm OS platform and Palm handhelds.
Developer solutions include commercial and shareware titles, vertical market applications and corporate enterprise products, as well as hardware snap-ons and expansion technologies. Australian-developed hardware solutions include a wireless modem for the Palm V series handhelds www.dotwap.com and a plug-in travel itinerary application www.classactionpl.com
"The Australian developer community is fast becoming one of the most active groups in the world," says Gavin Maxwell, platform developer alliance manager for Palm Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. "The increase in Australian Palm developers is a testament to Palm's worldwide success and strong market share. It is also an indication of developers' confidence in the future of the Palm OS platform."
In April 2001, Palm launched the Palm m500 series handhelds in Australia, which introduced Palm's dual expansion architecture in the form of a Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard expansion slot and a standardised Universal Connector for Palm handhelds, which supports add-on modules. SD/MultiMediaCard media are approximately the size of a postage stamp and may be used to further increase a handheld's capabilities, including the delivery and storage of large volumes of data, such as digital pictures, video, audio and electronic books. The expansion slot via SDIO also provides additional access to software and hardware, giving developers further opportunity to create more applications and exciting peripherals -- such as cameras, Bluetooth modules and GPS products -- for the Palm m500 series, as well as for future models of Palm handhelds.
The first Palm SD cards released for the Palm m500 series included two of Australia's most successful developers -- Code City, which created CityTime, a global time application, and Class Action, which developed Time Traveller, a travel itinerary application.
"Palm's PluggedIn Program was launched last year to encourage and assist hardware developers in marketing Palm handheld-compatible products. It aims to further increase the number of both Australian and international developers, and ultimately the size of the Palm Economy," said Mr. Maxwell.
